If your printer's status displays "Printer in error state," there may be a problem with the printer itself. If these first two steps did not resolve the error, check the printer for low paper or ink, and be sure the cover isn't open and the paper isn't jammed.
If your printer is turned on and connected to the network, Windows should find it easily. Available printers can include all printers on a network, such as Bluetooth and wireless printers, or printers that are plugged into another computer and shared on the network. You might need permission to install some printers. To reinstall your printer, follow these steps:
Howto: Automaticly Install Printer And Printer Port
Please wait a moment while Windows searches for the printers that are connected to the device (locally or wirelessly). Windows will then display a list of printers connected to your device. If you see your printer listed, select the Add device button for your printer. If you don't see your device listed, select Add manually.
If the system cannot install the printer automatically, you can reinstall it manually. When you select Add manually, you will then see five options to Find a printer by other options. Select the option that applies best for your situation and then follow the steps provided. All of the options can apply for a printer that is connected wirelessly or through your network. However, if your printer is connected directly to your computer locally, select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings and then select Next.
Select Use an existing port and then select the port the printer is connected to. Then select Next. If the printer is connected via USB, select it from the list. There are also options for parallel (LPT) and serial (COM) ports.

When you connect a printer to your PC or add a new printer to your home network, you can usually start printing right away. Windows supports most printers, and you probably won't have to go out of your way to install special printer software. If you're using Windows 8.1 or Windows RT 8.1, additional printer support and drivers are available through Windows Update.
In the list of available printers, select the one you want to use, and then click Next. (If your computer is connected to a network, only printers listed in Active Directory for your domain are displayed in the list.)
Make sure that the printer's electrical cord is plugged into an electrical outlet and that the power switch is turned on. If you're printing to a shared printer or a printer on a network, make sure that all necessary computers and routers are turned on too. If your printer or other equipment is plugged in to a surge protector or a backup power supply, make sure that hardware is plugged in and turned on as well.

Most printers require driver software to work properly. If you recently upgraded from one version of Windows to another, it's possible that the current printer driver is for the previous version of Windows. If you've had recent power outages, viruses, or other computer problems, it's possible that the drivers have become damaged. Downloading and installing the latest driver for your printer can resolve these types of problems.
Download and install the driver yourself . You can search for a driver on the manufacturer's website. Try this if Windows Update can't find a driver for your printer, and the printer didn't come with software that installs a driver.
Point and Print reduces administrative overhead, and simplifies and automates printing. Point and Print functionality was introduced in Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows 98 Second Edition (as a client), and Microsoft Windows NT 3.5 and later. When you connect to a printer on a print server, the connecting client looks for the appropriate drivers on the print server. If the drivers are installed on the server, the drivers are automatically downloaded and configured for the client. However, if the drivers are not present, you are prompted to select and install the drivers.
If your network contains a mixture of Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 98 Second Edition-based, Alpha-based, and x86-based computers, you can install printer drivers for each one on each print server. Doing this ensures that documents originating from Windows NT or Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows 98 Second Edition clients running on any of the hardware types can use all print devices. During Point and Print, Windows NT clients call the application programming interface (API) GetPrinterDriver, and obtain information about the drivers that are installed on the server. If a suitable driver cannot be found, the error message is passed to the client.
You can use IPP to print directly to a Uniform Resource Locator (URL) over an intranet or the Internet. In addition, you can install a printer from the Internet or intranet using Microsoft Internet Explorer. The error message can occur when the IPP print server does not have a suitable driver installed.
Have an older printer? It probably won't show up in the list, so choose Add manually instead, and then My printer is a little older. Help me find it to search for it. For more help adding a printer that isn't listed, see the manual instructions below.

If you get a dialogue stating ADDITIONAL PORT INFORMATION REQUIRED, the printer is probably not connected to the network. It will ask you for a DEVICE TYPE, Standard or Custom. Leave the choice as STANDARD, GENERIC NETWORK CARD, and select NEXT.
If your computer was not able to locate a driver for the printer, or if you got the error above asking for additional port information, the next dialogue will ask you to INSTALL THE PRINT DRIVER. From the left side of the table, select the MANUFACTURER of the printer. From the right side of the table select the PRINTER MODEL. If the printer you are trying to install is available in the INSTALL THE PRINT DRIVER dialogue, select it and say NEXT, then FINISH.
Most of the smaller, standalone printers will not require a code to print. Depending on departmental policy you may be asked to report how many pages you print to these printers and report this number to your business manager or other appointed person.
If your network-capable printer is not automatically detected by Windows, you will need to set it up manually. This will involve going to your printer menu, configuring a TCP/IP a port, and installing the drivers. Follow the steps below to add a network printer in Windows 10.
Then click Add a Printer.Note: Once Windows detects your printer, all you have to do is follow the on-screen instructions for setting it up. If this is the case, you can stop at this point. However, if Windows does not auto-detect your printer, proceed to the next step.
In the drop-down menu for Standard Device Type, select the device type that corresponds with your printer brand. For example, if you have a Canon printer, choose either Canon Network Printer or Canon Network Printing Device. Windows will then detect the driver model. You will notice that once it detects the driver, your printer will be added to the list of devices in the Printer & Scanners menu.
Set up optional preferences. Type a printer name if you want to. Otherwise, click Next. In the next window, you could also set up set up printer sharing if you like (generally you should not do this). Once done, click on Next.
